Seven Year Time Travel

Tiburon, CA
I went back in time seven years while visiting Tiburon, the place where I began writing Birthmarked. The hills where I used to walk were the same dry gold, and the wind filled my ears with familiar solitude. I had no idea, then, that my life was about to change. I only knew that I liked this new world I was exploring and that it pulled at me in a way that no other writing project ever had before.
Since then, my kids have grown and moved out.… Continue reading

When a hundred high school students gather to celebrate literacy and culture, expect a lot of fun. From the moment of entering down the red carpet and receiving my event tee-shirt, I knew I was among new friends, and I kept meeting cool readers for the next five hours. The students were amazing: funny,… Continue reading
Getting Locked In
I’m psyched. Tomorrow night, I’m getting locked in the gym at Windham High School with a hundred students for the 4th annual Lock-In for Literacy and Culture. Senior Rebecca Bowling asked me personally when we met at the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair, and she was impressively poised and earnest. What most appealed to me was the way the lock-in was organized by the students, for the students. It’s geared to celebrate reading,… Continue reading
Expecting Green
We have forsythia. I doubt

and a gauntlet to summer.
As I drove south to New Haven
yesterday, the roadside trees
went from leafless
to budding green,
predicting over distance
what will happen in time
here in my own yard.
I hope.
Once the leaves burgeon

Write Faster!
When I receive an email from a reader asking me to write faster, I always wish I could oblige. The truth is, I’m a steady writer, but not a particularly fast one. I put the hours in and need to go through layers of revisions to produce anything worthwhile. Sometimes my drafts go quickly, but other times they go backwards. I’m amazed at my friends who can write three or four books a year, and I wish I knew how to do the same. Maybe someday I’ll learn.
For now,… Continue reading
