When a hundred high school students gather to celebrate literacy and culture, expect a lot of fun. That’s what characterized the night at the 4th annual Lock-In for Literacy and Culture at Windham High School last Friday. From the moment of entering down the red carpet and receiving my event tee-shirt, I knew I was among new friends, and I kept meeting cool readers for the next five hours. The students were amazing: funny, smart, relaxed, creative, and deep. We played Ping Pong together, Zumba-ed, and ate midnight pizza. Besides giving a short speech and a reading, I had the chance to sit with a small group at a quiet table at the top of a stairwell to do some writing and share our work. That was a precious hour for me.

A few more highlights: teacher Dara Bowling, who kicked off the event, emphasized that the “culture” part of the Lock-In for Literacy and Culture was the community of people who attended. Readers were encouraged to interact with new friends by earning multiple raffle tickets for doing activities with people they didn’t normally hang out with. We signed each other’s keepsake shirts with silver markers, personalizing them. Henna, hairstyle, and nail polish artists spiffed us up. A Twitter hashtag feed was projected up on the wall so we could share photos live (#whslockin2015). Jason Reynolds gave a fabulous, inspiring talk about becoming a writer, from his teen years when he didn’t read and dreamed of being Queen Latifah, to the discovery that his own voice, his true, authentic voice, was “good enough.” It brings his novels alive.
