{"id":794,"date":"2011-02-21T20:13:23","date_gmt":"2011-02-22T01:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.old.caraghobrien.com\/book\/?p=794"},"modified":"2011-02-22T11:17:22","modified_gmt":"2011-02-22T16:17:22","slug":"facebook-amigas-and-a-foreign-rights-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/birthmarked\/facebook-amigas-and-a-foreign-rights-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook, Amigas, and a Foreign Rights Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the Internet, I\u2019ve become friends with Eva Rubio, a university student in Salamanca, Spain, who blogged enthusiastically about <em>Birthmarked<\/em> last summer.\u00a0 Eva was determined for\u00a0<em>Birthmarked<\/em> to be translated into Spanish, so she and her friend Roc\u00edo Mu\u00f1oz started a Facebook page aptly named <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/group.php?gid=130587696966619&amp;v=wall&amp;ref=mf\" target=\"_blank\">Queremos que Birthmarked de Caragh M. O&#8217;Brien sea publicado en Espa\u00f1a<\/a><\/em><em> <\/em>and started collecting followers.\u00a0 I thought they were unbelievably nice, but I didn\u2019t hold out much hope.<\/p>\n<p>When my family made plans to visit Salamanca last summer, Eva and I realized we could meet in person.\u00a0 I was beyond excited. \u00a0Not even my lack of Spanish could deter me. \u00a0Curiously, Eva\u2019s grasp of written English was so good that she could read my entire novel effortlessly, but she couldn\u2019t understand spoken English or speak it any better than I could understand or speak Spanish, so she brought along a couple friends, Cris and Leticia, and Leticia interpreted for us.\u00a0 I brought along my college-aged daughter, and the five of us strolled around the midieval quarter and Calle del Toro, visiting boutique bookstores and window shopping. \u00a0We laughed a lot. \u00a0We bonded. \u00a0We were friends.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_800\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video\/video.php?v=1312486261386&amp;oid=130587696966619\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-800\" class=\"size-full wp-image-800\" title=\"Eva and Caragh in Salamanca, June, 2010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Eva-and-Me.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eva and Caragh in Salamanca, June 2010<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In our last moments together, we shot a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video\/video.php?v=1312486261386&amp;oid=130587696966619\" target=\"_blank\">tiny movie<\/a> of Eva and me together in the incredibly beautiful, lively Plaza Mayor.\u00a0 The whole thing was sweet and goofy beyond belief.<\/p>\n<p>Within a few weeks of its initiation, the Spanish Facebook page had more members than my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Caragh-M-OBrien-Writer\/311588922533?ref=search&amp;sid=1350338064.1035632489..1\" target=\"_blank\">American Facebook page<\/a> had gained in months, and when I spoke to my agent shortly after my trip to Spain, four Spanish publishers had contacted him about foreign rights.\u00a0 That was June.\u00a0 A month later, my agent told me we had an offer from Grupo Everest.\u00a0 I could hardly believe it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_801\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jj6M4-TVBnE\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-801\" class=\"size-full wp-image-801\" title=\"Spanish Book Trailer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Spanish-Book-Trailer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spanish Book Trailer for Birthmarked<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Along the way, the original Spanish Facebook page lost its administrators, but Eva and Roc\u00edo started a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Birthmarked-Spain\/107762135960936\" target=\"_blank\">second one<\/a>.\u00a0 They were unstoppable.\u00a0 One of their friends created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jj6M4-TVBnE\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish book trailer<\/a>, and others found photos of actors (one quite<em> caliente<\/em>, I must admit) who resembled the characters.\u00a0 They linked to other reviews, signings, a giveaway, music, and basically lived it up about Gaia&#8217;s story.\u00a0 I could hardly make sense of the Spanish, but it was definitely silly and fun.<\/p>\n<p>When I heard the news that the deal with Everest was final, I asked Eva to be the one to announce it, which she did on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juvenilromantica.es\/2011\/02\/oh-dios-mio-por-fin-podemos-decirlo-en.html\" target=\"_blank\">her website<\/a> and on Facebook last week. \u00a0Now it\u2019s for real: <em>Birthmarked<\/em> will be published in Spain this fall.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all thanks to Eva and Roc\u00edo, and the sweeping reach of Facebook.\u00a0 Gracias, mis amigas!\u00a0 Gaia sends her love.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the Internet, I\u2019ve become friends with Eva Rubio, a university student in Salamanca, Spain, who blogged enthusiastically about Birthmarked last summer.\u00a0 Eva was determined for\u00a0Birthmarked to be translated into Spanish, so she and her friend Roc\u00edo Mu\u00f1oz started a Facebook page aptly named Queremos que Birthmarked de Caragh M.
