Though libraries have started opening again in a limited fashion, ordering picture books from them is still a challenge because browsing to facilitate discovery isn\u2019t possible. I\u2019ve turned the recent hardship into a justification to purchase more books than I normally would, and I\u2019m so happy with the results. By perusing award lists and recommended titles, I\u2019ve discovered a bunch of new books that have quickly become favorites. I\u2019ve rediscovered Dr. Seuss\u2019s Sneetches collection, too, which includes the spooky story about the pale green pants with nobody inside them.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t discovered these yet, check out the following picture books. Once you reach the last page, your little ones are certain to say, &#8220;Again!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/31933081-bear-came-along?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=utM79veoiX&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bear Came Along<\/em><\/a> by Richard T. Morris and LeUyen Pham<\/p>\n<p>As a bear floats down the river, collecting friends along the way, the illustrations gradually change from black and white to full color, and the sideways page is a nice surprise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/36959765-adrian-simcox-does-not-have-a-horse?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=xXQjUT4rZa&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Adrian Simcox Does NOT Have a Horse<\/em><\/a> by Nancy Campbell and Corinna Luyken<\/p>\n<p>A story of compassion and imagination is beautifully illustrated, and for the careful observer, the negative space makes a horse magically appear.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/28234753-alma-and-how-she-got-her-name?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=tjfBpJDL6N&amp;rank=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Alma and How She Got Her Name<\/em><\/a> by Juana Martinez-Neal<\/p>\n<p>Alma&#8217;s family heritage is captured in the people and stories behind her name, inviting readers to be curious about their own names and futures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/38792203-truman?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=zjE151O5rk&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Truman<\/em><\/a> by Jean Reidy and Lucy Ruth Cummins<\/p>\n<p>A brave turtle decides to follow a friend downtown.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/29437310-garden-sounds?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=2V5yv2dMvc&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Garden Sounds<\/em><\/a> by Sam Taplin<\/p>\n<p>With sounds and holes for poking, this book and others in the collection by Osborne Touchy-Feely Sound Books are especially popular with our 11-month-olds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/816487.The_Sneetches_and_Other_Stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Sneetches and Other Stories<\/em><\/a> by Dr. Seuss<\/p>\n<p>Brilliant and profound, these classic stories invite us to consider our humanity, our tribes, and our capacity for kindness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/31247841-triangle?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=aB5RIxV5HC&amp;rank=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Triangle<\/em><\/a> by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen<\/p>\n<p>One of a charming trio of books about Triangle, Square, and Circle, this silly story about playing a trick on a friend lets us wonder what is a mistake and what is intentional. If you have not discovered Jon Klassen yet, I can&#8217;t recommend his hat trilogy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/28473874-we-found-a-hat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>We Found A Hat<\/em><\/a>) highly enough. Be prepared: he can get a bit subversive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/35396839-i-am-enough?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=MsoDq6PTMg&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>I Am Enough<\/em><\/a> by Grace Byers<\/p>\n<p>In this simple, affirming book, short rhyming phrases remind us to live in love, not fear, and the illustrations show children of diverse backgrounds and abilities playing as friends.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/20821299-the-book-with-no-pictures?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=FXeW2Z5LU0&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Book With No Pictures<\/em><\/a> by B. J. Novak<\/p>\n<p>True to its title, this pictureless book compels a reader to say silly words in silly voices. It&#8217;ll crack you up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/44672344-in-a-jar?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=hZmL3BkTr8&amp;rank=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>In a Jar<\/em><\/a> by Deborah Marcero<\/p>\n<p>A bunny and his friend save items and ephemeral experiences in jars, creating a magical bond. The illustrations are blissfully gorgeous.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/17288686-disney---frozen?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=2l5QnoNks7&amp;rank=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disney&#8217;s <em>Frozen<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fans of the film will enjoy this detailed telling of Anna and Elsa&#8217;s story. The Big Golden Book format has bright, familiar illustrations on big pages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/43484009-the-hike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Hike<\/em> <\/a>by Alison Farrell<\/p>\n<p>Three friends set off on a hike, get lost, and find their way again. Labeled illustrations of the vegetation add an inviting, botanical accuracy that nature lovers will enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/34362953-a-big-mooncake-for-little-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>A Big Mooncake for Little Star<\/em><\/a> by Grace Lin<\/p>\n<p>A little girl nibbles away at the mooncake she made with her mom until it shrinks away to nothing. Lovely illustrations bring the night sky close, and the story sent us on a quest to learn about traditional Chinese mooncakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1039943.Up_North_at_the_Cabin?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=c1luztr9cu&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Up North at the Cabin<\/em><\/a> by Marsha Wilson Chall and Steven Johnson<\/p>\n<p>With beautiful, evocative illustrations and lyrical poetry, this story perfectly captures a childhood trip to the cabin in Northern Minnesota. I am repeatedly awed by how fantastic this is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/29102937-wolf-in-the-snow?ac=1&amp;from_search=true&amp;qid=6YeTIK1e6m&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Wolf in the Snow<\/em><\/a> by Matthew Cordell<\/p>\n<p>With minimal words, this adventure story brings together a child in a red jacket and a wolf pup. The deceptively simple illustrations create a captivating world of snow and evening light.<\/p>\n<p>If you have other favorites, feel free to mention them in the comments.
