{"id":3294,"date":"2014-03-17T16:26:45","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T20:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.old.caraghobrien.com\/book\/?p=3294"},"modified":"2014-07-11T16:35:49","modified_gmt":"2014-07-11T20:35:49","slug":"the-vault-of-dreamers-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/the-vault-of-dreamers\/the-vault-of-dreamers-map\/","title":{"rendered":"The Vault of Dreamers Map"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3296\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3296\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CobMapPic.jpg\" alt=\"Map Day\" width=\"275\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CobMapPic.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CobMapPic-244x300.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map Day<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My new novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/20518838-the-vault-of-dreamers\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Vault of Dreamers<\/em><\/a>, takes place at the Forge School, an elite arts academy where every student is perpetually filmed for a reality TV show. \u00a0The isolated campus of the boarding school is in the prairie of Kansas, where future weather fluctuates between tropical rainstorms and sunny, cool fall days.\u00a0 The setting, with its thousands of cameras, simultaneously bolsters the fame of the creative students and robs of them of their privacy.\u00a0 That mix of pressure is a key element for character development and for plot.<\/p>\n<p>In rather the same way that I developed Wharfton and the Enclave for <em>Birthmarked<\/em>,\u00a0 creating my fictional world for <em>The Vault of Dreamers<\/em> has involved envisioning the campus.\u00a0 I sketched out the earliest draft of a map of the Forge School last December, when my editor asked if I had a layout for the buildings, and since then, I\u2019ve tweaked the map as I revised the novel, shifting buildings to keep them consistent with the text.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend, I finally had a chance to draw out a proper map of the Forge School campus, with the intertwining roads, buildings, towers, and gardens.\u00a0 It was a curious, satisfying exercise.
