A Survey: 3 Years Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2899\" alt=\"Hand 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Hand-3-e1371480721972.jpg\" width=\"158\" height=\"137\" \/>I asked my fellow YA and MG writers whose debut novels appeared in 2010 to answer a few questions about their publishing and writing lives today, three years after our books came out.\u00a0 Of the original 72 writers who were eligible to reply (they were in <a href=\"http:\/\/10-ers.livejournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Tenners<\/a>), 23 responded anonymously between May 20 and June 14, 2013, and all of the respondents reported themselves as actively writing still.\u00a0 In case you\u2019d like a hint to remember some of the new names from 2010, our year included <a href=\"http:\/\/juliekagawa.com\/wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\">Julie Kagawa<\/a> (<i>The Iron King<\/i>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leahcypess.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leah Cypess<\/a> (<i>Mistwood<\/i>), <a href=\"http:\/\/kierstenwrites.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kiersten White<\/a> (<i>Paranormalcy<\/i>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephanieperkins.com\/books.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stephanie Perkins<\/a> (<i>Anna and the French Kiss<\/i>), <a href=\"http:\/\/home.comcast.net\/~jenniferrhubbard\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Hubbard<\/a> (<i>The Secret Year<\/i>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Teri-Hall\/e\/B002NH3TE2\/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1371480083&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Teri Hall<\/a> (<i>The Line<\/i>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beccafitzpatrick.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Becca Fitzpatrick <\/a>(<i>Hush, Hush<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>While this survey admittedly captures a small sample and is not scientific, the results are still interesting.\u00a0 For instance, the results suggest that the turnover of a writer\u2019s editors is more common than the turnover of her agents, and that many of these writers are satisfied with their writing lives.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever thought that a writer doesn\u2019t have to have a bestseller or earn a living writing to be satisfied with her writing, this small sample supports that theory.<\/p>\n<p>My heartfelt thanks to the writers who completed my survey.\u00a0 I appreciate their honesty and admire their tenacity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1.
