What\u2019s It Feel Like to Finish Writing a Trilogy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A. It took a while for it to hit.\u00a0 I\u2019d been revising <em>Promised<\/em> on and off for months as it went through its final stages, and then one day in June, I was in New York having lunch with my editor, and she said she had a couple last catches on the second pass pages for me to look at.\u00a0 So we sat at the round table by the window in her seventh-floor office, and turned through the tabbed pages for the last tiny things.\u00a0 For instance, we\u2019d had ongoing conversations about whether to use \u201cnotched\u201d consistently rather than \u201cnocked\u201d for an arrow, and one spot of that still remained.\u00a0 We finished up and I sat back and thought, \u201cIt\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2082\" title=\"FortSanFelipo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FortSanFelipo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" \/>But it wasn\u2019t really done because I was still revising a short story, \u201cRuled,\u201d and the story involved the same world and characters, so they were still tromping around in my head.\u00a0 When \u201cRuled\u201d was finally finished and sent off, it was a small click of an email, and not very momentous.\u00a0 So it took a while for the truth to sneak up on me, and it came as wistful loneliness.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a particularly sentimental person, and I didn\u2019t exactly miss my characters. \u00a0Rather, I missed being engulfed. \u00a0I missed the familiar puzzle that had fascinated me for years.\u00a0 I would never get that particular puzzle back again.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m over that. \u00a0Now I&#8217;m excited about <em>Promised<\/em> coming out in a few more weeks.\u00a0 I&#8217;m hoping readers who have followed Gaia this far will be surprised and afraid and satisfied by where she goes in her last adventure.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of my family, and my editor and my agent, and the team at Roaring Brook, who all helped with the crafting of Gaia\u2019s story, and I\u2019m grateful.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s it feel like to finish?\u00a0 It feels like gratitude.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A.
