\"\"It\u2019s been hot, but whenever I feel like complaining, I think of all the people who haven\u2019t had power this week and I imagine what they\u2019ve endured without air conditioning.\u00a0 Then I wonder if running my air conditioner will deplete the ozone layer more and give us worse summers in the future.\u00a0 Then I look up stuff on the ozone layer<\/a> and discover ozone-depleting chemicals have been banned from home air conditioners since the Montreal Protocol<\/a> was signed in 1989.\u00a0 The only snag is, it\u2019ll take 50 years for all the ozone-depleting chemicals we released before the Montreal Protocol to be cleared from the stratosphere.<\/p>\n

So, I no longer feel guilty about my air conditioner ruining the ozone.\u00a0 I only feel guilty about it using up a lot of electricity.\u00a0 Then I imagine our future and how people will survive, and I picture solar farms, violent storms, the new plague, and curious beauty.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m having fun writing my next book. \u00a0I\u2019m also making ice cream sodas this afternoon.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the recipe.<\/p>\n

Ice Cream Soda<\/span><\/p>\n

Hershey\u2019s Syrup
\nVanilla ice cream
\nSeltzer water
\nWhipped cream (optional)
\nCherry (optional)<\/p>\n

Squirt a nice big gob of Hershey\u2019s syrup in the bottom of a glass.\u00a0 Add a little vanilla ice cream and mix the two together into a gray mash.\u00a0 Add seltzer water until the glass is half full, and stir it until the gray mash is dissolved.\u00a0 Add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream to float in the seltzer mixture.\u00a0 Squirt a little more syrup on top to make it look nice.\u00a0 The whipped cream and cherry are optional.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
