{"id":1623,"date":"2012-02-23T11:19:54","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T16:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.old.caraghobrien.com\/book\/?p=1623"},"modified":"2012-02-29T10:51:45","modified_gmt":"2012-02-29T15:51:45","slug":"cover-reveal-promised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/promised-2\/cover-reveal-promised\/","title":{"rendered":"Cover Reveal: Promised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have the final cover for <em>Promised!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/PROMISEDcover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1661\" title=\"PROMISEDcover\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/PROMISEDcover-e1330530605277.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"454\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luscious, if you ask me.\u00a0 I have a thing for bright, bold book covers, so I\u2019m thrilled about the red and the way the bracelet zings forward against the fabric background.\u00a0 I love the continuation of the distinctive, lyrical Trinculo font from the first two books in the series, too.\u00a0 Tim Green of <a href=\"http:\/\/faceoutstudio.com\/2009_design\/2009_design\/about_us\/studio_space\/\" target=\"_blank\">faceoutstudio<\/a> designed this cover, as he did the paperback of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/generalbooks.bookstore.uconn.edu\/book\/9780312674724\" target=\"_blank\">Birthmarked<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Book 1) and the hardcover of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/generalbooks.bookstore.uconn.edu\/book\/9781596435704\" target=\"_blank\">Prized<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Book 2).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1629\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1629\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1629\" title=\"BirthmarkedPBCover100px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/BirthmarkedPBCover100px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"149\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Book 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I believe a cover should invite a reader in visually, and create a vibrant initial impression upon which the novel expands.\u00a0 Ideally, the cover art and novel should not only match, but add to each other, so that by the time a reader has become wrapped up in the story, she also feels like she has been wrapped inside the cover. \u00a0Forever after, the story and the cover art should be inextricably meshed.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of <em>Promised<\/em>, I was still revising while we were designing the cover, and my editor and I discussed possible objects from the story that could serve as focal points, the way the ribbon and the monocle were visually appealing and symbolically resonant for the <em>Birthmarked<\/em> and <em>Prized<\/em> covers.\u00a0 My draft of <em>Promised<\/em> had a significant anklet and a blue ribbon worked into the sleeve of a dress, and as I pondered them more, I discovered they would work better combined into a bracelet.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1631\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1631\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1631\" title=\"PrizedCover100px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/PrizedCover100px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"147\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Book 2<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I came up with a description of a bracelet with many glowing bands and filigree, and my editor sent that along to faceout.\u00a0 When Tim Green sent back an image of a single band, with the exact glow and filigree I\u2019d imagined, I was mesmerized.\u00a0 From then on, I adjusted the description in the book to match the bracelet, and that\u2019s what is used on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>It was satisfying and fascinating to collaborate on ideas for this cover.\u00a0 Normally, cover artists work from the text of a completed book to come up with their cover designs.\u00a0 In our case, the cover artist and I sent text and images back and forth, and I was able to work from the draft images of the cover to revise my novel.\u00a0 How cool is that?<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;re wondering, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/promised-caragh-m-obrien\/1108813629?ean=9781596435711&amp;itm=5&amp;usri=caragh+m.+o%27brien\" target=\"_blank\">Promised<\/a><\/em> is due out on October 2, 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have the final cover for Promised!
