Perhaps you feel an extra bit of joy as you read my book, knowing you outsmarted the system and took it for free.\u00a0 You might think that I\u2019ll never know, or that it\u2019s a compliment when you want a book enough to steal it, or that I don\u2019t need the $2.49 I would have earned if you\u2019d paid to buy Prized<\/em> on Kindle.\u00a0 You might think there\u2019s nothing wrong with downloading pirated books for free since so many others do it, too.<\/p>\n

The truth is, I do need that money.\u00a0 Within two weeks, from one site alone, 168 book pirates stole more than $400 from me, and three times that much from my publisher.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what bothers me most.\u00a0 I worked on Prized<\/em> for over a year.\u00a0 Do you know what it\u2019s like to devote yourself to one project for such a long time?\u00a0 My livelihood, and that of my editor and a team of hard-working people at Roaring Brook, depends on the sale of our books to honest readers who pay a fair price for them.\u00a0 You\u2019ve cheated me, and you\u2019ve treated my work like it\u2019s worthless.<\/p>\n

You make a difference.\u00a0 Every choice you make to be honest or dishonest adds or subtracts something to our world.\u00a0 Get my book from the library if you have no money.\u00a0 Borrow it from a friend.\u00a0 But quit stealing. \u00a0Become a better person.<\/p>\n
