{"id":1134,"date":"2011-09-20T13:24:22","date_gmt":"2011-09-20T17:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.old.caraghobrien.com\/book\/?p=1134"},"modified":"2011-09-20T13:24:22","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T17:24:22","slug":"friends-and-writers-at-the-bbf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/birthmarked\/friends-and-writers-at-the-bbf\/","title":{"rendered":"Friends and Writers at the BBF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What most surprised me about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynbookfestival.org\/BBF\/Home\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Book Festival<\/a> was how big it was, and how many people were meandering around looking at books, reading on the steps, and filling up the chairs for the panels.\u00a0 At first, it was too much to take in, but once I had a map and saw where the Youth Stoop stage was, I had my landmark for the day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1136\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1136\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1136\" title=\"AnotherWorldforBlog\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/AnotherWorldforBlog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"197\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caragh M. Another World Panel, Youth Stoop, BBF.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I enjoyed being on the Another World panel with Jewell Parker Rhodes and Bill Willingham, especially since they went first and I could see how they talked about their work and answered questions.\u00a0 Jewell gave us a nice big spoiler, which was funny, and Bill described his talking animals, with no spoilers.\u00a0 Susan Chang was a gracious and thoughtful moderator.\u00a0 Thanks, Susan!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1135\" style=\"width: 120px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1135\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1135\" title=\"TeamAdam\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/TeamAdam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"110\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Adam<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cory Doctorow, Gayle Forman, and Jacqueline Woodson were interesting together on the subsequent panel, Making Difficult Choices, in part because their books are so different.\u00a0 I was happy to moderate because I was able to ask what I most wanted to know and think about the ways books change individual readers and then the world.\u00a0 Gayle\u2019s pins for \u201cTeam Adam,\u201d if you haven\u2019t yet heard, are in support of guys who are really nice, solid guys and not self-absorbed jerks.\u00a0 I&#8217;m paraphrasing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1137\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1137\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1137\" title=\"AtTent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/AtTent.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caragh M. O&#39;Brien, Casey Scieszka, Steven Weinberg, Nancy Mercado, and Tommy Greenwald<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Afterward, I had the chance to hang around talking with some very nice readers and bloggers.\u00a0 Then I met up with Nancy Mercado, my editor, and some of the other writers who have her as an editor: Tommy Greenwald, Casey Scieszka, and Steven Weinberg.  We had conspired via email to meet in person and secretly gawk at each other, wondering what we must have in common that Nan had chosen all of our different books.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1142\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1142\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1142\" title=\"NoodlePuddingForBlog\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/NoodlePuddingForBlog1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"264\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Front: Laura Toffler-Corrie, Tommy Greenwald, Nancy Mercado. Not pictured: Tracy White.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/listings\/restaurant\/noodle-pudding\/\" target=\"_blank\">Noodle Pudding<\/a>, I discovered that Lauren Tarshis, Nan Marino and I are all writers who don\u2019t write with outlines, but rather immerse ourselves in the scenes and plan to rewrite massively after we have a complete draft.\u00a0 It made me think our editor must be especially good at seeing the kernel of a valuable idea in a manuscript and trusting that she can help us work to develop that.\u00a0 At least, that\u2019s my new theory.
