{"id":1059,"date":"2011-08-08T09:19:18","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T13:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.old.caraghobrien.com\/book\/?p=1059"},"modified":"2011-08-08T09:19:18","modified_gmt":"2011-08-08T13:19:18","slug":"road-trip-with-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/birthmarked\/road-trip-with-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Road Trip with Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/SamarasBook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1063\" title=\"SamarasBook\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/SamarasBook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a>By the time my daughter and I became log-jammed in two hours of traffic south of D.C., we\u2019d had a chance to visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/hirshhorn.si.edu\/exhibitions\/view.asp?key=19&amp;subkey=526\" target=\"_blank\">Hirshhorn Museum <\/a>and we were still high on having our minds boggled.\u00a0 I was pondering the two great elephants in the gray room, and the way I was irresistibly drawn to walk between Gordon&#8217;s screens, uneasily safe while the beasts were captive, with their natural beauty trapped in a barren, dizzying world.\u00a0 I liked how Samaras&#8217;s book made of needles looked both soft and prickly, the way a real book can both lure me in and prove dangerous.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1061\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1061\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1061\" title=\"JanDibbets\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caraghobrien.com\/book\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JanDibbets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"138\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the Hirshhorn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I liked how I would still be discovering new things about Jan Dibbets\u2019s \u201cThe Shortest Day of the Year\u201d much later when I was explaining for my sister the long installation of sequential photographs, each taken of the same window view six minutes apart.\u00a0 It\u2019s about time, and light, and the spectator is part of the art because you have to move along it to experience it, so time and space are married there, pace after pace.\u00a0 It changes you.\u00a0 I love stuff like that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"&quot;Book No. 6,&quot;
