Q: Do You Write When You’re on Vacation?
A: Yes. My life is less fun if I’m not writing, so on vacation, I usually find time to write. It’s often only a couple of hours on the plane or in the morning before I join the rest of the family, but that’s enough to keep my ideas going and stay connected to the calm, inner part of myself. I need that to fortify me in the chaos of a zillion interactions. The few times I’ve tried to leave my computer behind, thinking that would be healthy for me, I’ve ended up buying a tablet of paper.
My most recent family reunion in northern Minnesota involved 32 relatives, four ukuleles, one harrumph, a new water ski, and a dead mouse. It was totally fun, and I received lots of advice about my writing, especially my title for my new series.
As I was paddle boarding around the island with one of my favorite nieces, an art major who leads Widji trips during the summers, we realized how great it was to be enjoying vacation but also looking forward to the return to regular life. We’re lucky when both are equally sweet.
