A Long-Distance Visit to Topeka
A Skype visit took me to the Seaman High School Library in Topeka where I had a chance to talk with Marian Sweany’s most excellent book group this morning. The seven lively students were full of insights and questions about the Birthmarked series. It was cool to hear their observations about the reversal of the power dynamics between men and women in the first two books, and they seemed to think a fourth book is in order so they can see what happens ultimately for Gaia and Leon.
Speaking of Leon, he’s a favorite character. No surprise there. The readers told me they like seeing some romance in YA novels, and I can definitely understand that.
I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that if Birthmarked is made into a movie, then I should retain some creative control so I can be sure to get the details right. I’m not sure filming it in Topeka would be particularly accurate, but it would be fun.
Many thanks to Marian and her readers. It was great talking to you this morning!
