SCAVENGER HUNT POST

Alyxandra Harvey

Alyxandra Harvey

Today, I am hosting Alyxandra Harvey on my website for the YA Scavenger Hunt.  Alyx and I have never met in person, but if I had 21 green spiders, I would trade them all for a chance to have a cup of tea with her.

Author Bio: Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of “The Lady of Shalott” by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.

Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with her husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.

You can visit Alyx at www.alyxandraharvey.com, and learn more about her latest book, Whisper the Dead (The Lovegrove Legacy), which is due out on October 7th.

WhispertheDeadCDescription: Something evil is once again menacing Mayfair and Gretchen must find a way to master her newfound magical power. Along with her cousins, a madcap named Moira, and the icy yet irresistible Tobias Lawless, Gretchen faces deadly threats and unimaginable loss in the hopes of preventing a horrible sacrifice.

Gretchen’s familiar pushed its wolfhound head out of her chest and leapt down onto the carpet. The phosphorescent dog glowed like moonlight through an icy lake. He proceeded to race in delighted circles around the room, bounding over chairs, sliding across the polished floors, and barking at the peacock feathers wafting out several bronze urns. Gretchen felt slightly less caged by the silk and the stuffiness, and the perfumed air. She could breathe again.

The majority of the guests didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. A few weeks ago, Gretchen wouldn’t have noticed anything either, never mind been the cause of a wild dog the size of a pony galloping about the room.

“Lady Gretchen, do you think that’s wise?”

She started. The last thing she’d expected was for Tobias to address her directly, never mind under the fronds of a potted palm tree. The bright hard blue of his waistcoat matched his eyes. His tone was witheringly disdainful.

                  “Sorry?” She asked.

“Your familiar is not meant to be used as entertainment.” Disdain dipped into cold disapproval.

She raised one eyebrow. “She’s not hurting anyone.”

                  “There are rules.”

She should have guessed. He just looked like the type to talk about rules.

“Oh, stuff your rules,” she said, mostly because he sounded like her mother. That and she wanted to see just how much she could needle him. She wasn’t disappointed. He straightened, though she hadn’t realized his shoulders actually could go straighter. She’d seen women in too-tight corsets with more malleable spines.

“You are not a child,” he snapped. “Recall your familiar.”

Child, was it? She only barely bit back a reply of “make me”. Even at seven years old, her brother Godric hadn’t been this infuriating. And he’d been the very devil, whatever he said about her at the same age. She very clearly remembered an incident with molasses and red ants in the drawing room.

Her wolfhound galloped toward them, teeth bared. Gretchen was reluctantly impressed when Tobias didn’t flinch. He barely flicked the wolfhound a glance. She couldn’t see his familiar, but she could feel it. It must be something quite powerful to be sensed even though he hadn’t released it.

Damn it. She’d hoped it was something common like a garden rat; something to offend his dignity. He certainly seemed to have a lot of it to offend.

Gretchen’s wolfhound sat on her left foot. She refused to recall it completely on principle. Tobias seemed to know as much. He bowed coldly in her direction before stalking away. She watched him go. Her wolfhound growled once. She would have patted his head, if he was a real dog. “My feelings exactly.”

Thanks, Alyx!

Don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win the prize of signed books by Alyx, me, and more. To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 21. Add up all the favorite clue numbers of the authors on the green team and you’ll have the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
