Different perspectives made for an interesting panel last week when I joined fellow writers Pegi Deitz Shea, Dana Meachen Rau and Sandra Horning, and literary agent Alex Slater (of Trident Media) at UConn. Our panel, aptly named Writing and Publishing Children’s and YA Literature, covered picture books, illustrations, trends in the young adult market, work-for-hire projects, and the value of writers’ groups and SCBWI. Erick Piller, Assistant Director of the Creative Writing Program, was a thoughtful, welcoming moderator. Attendees seemed particularly interested in the publishing process and how different that can be for a variety of writers. Alex’s description of how he weighs 20 or more queries a day suggested how difficult it can be for a writer’s work to stand out. It was a pleasure to meet some of the young writers (Tia! Sophia!) who attended and see their enthusiasm for writing.

  • I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and insights at the panel discussion. I was sitting in the back with my two kids (16 & 11 y.o.). They are both in the process of writing their own novels and the experience was very motivating for them. You made their dreams seem more real and at the same time helped them see the reality of the whole writing process. As their biggest fan and supporter it meant more then you can know to see them inspired. Thanks

  • Mitch ~ I’m so glad! We had many great, practical questions that showed how serious writers in the audience were. I hope your kids find ample time to explore their ideas and keep their art alive. If you or they have more questions further along the line, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m always happy to help if I can. I must say that having a supportive dad makes all the difference.
    All best,
    Caragh

  • Gotta love those sneaks!

  • Jim ~ Ha! Thanks. When it doubt, go snazzy.
    All best,
    Caragh
